In Joyas Voladoras Brian Doyle says a lot of very interesting facts relating to hummingbirds. I, for one, didn’t there were so many hummingbird species. I really enjoyed the great visuals that he was able to create with his word choice. “A hummingbirds heard is the size of a pencil eraser.” In contrast he compared the heart of a blue whale to the size of a car. Doyle seems to be able to connect many different ideas to create a single picture in the readers mind. This collage of ideas then leaves the reader with the single question of “what does he really want to tell us?” Something that I found interesting was why he said “So much is held in a heart in a lifetime”. This idea focuses my mind on the thought that he may be talking about how we are all different. But yet, so any of us choose to live our life with that one goal in our mind, and without knowing we end up melting the engine. We do so in that we waste precious heartbeats, in a cubical for example, doing boring repetitious work. Always trying to stand out and impress the boss all to get that promotion that will offer a bigger pay check, rather than enjoying time with the ones we love. We end up losing sight of the memories that make life special, the priceless moments, by the time we realize how much time has gone by it would have been too late. Every living creature on earth has a beating heart. They are all different, some are miniscule and other are enormous. We will all take different routes in life.
