Kiki Strike and the Shadow City is a fiction novel by Kirsten Miller. The story revolves around a group of delinquent girl scouts known as the Irregulars, and takes place in current day New York City. The Irregulars consist of the infamous Kiki Strike, the chemist DeeDee Morlock, the mechanic Luz Lopez, the hacker and forger Oona Wong, the master of disguise Betty Bent, and everyday girl Ananka Fishbein. After discovering a secret subterranean city spanning beneath Manhattan, known as the Shadow City, Ananka and Kiki gather a group of girls with special talents to aid them on their quest. Through a hidden entrance located in a graveyard, the Irregulars sneak into the underground city each night, mapping the streets and finding the treasures that lay within it. Along the way they encounter complicating obstacles, such as the ravaging packs of man eating rats, and explosions that nearly destroy all of New York. The girl super-spy they thought they once knew, now told them that she was actually the Princess of Pokrovia, a small country in Europe. Livia had poisoned Kiki’s parents when Kiki was a baby, in hopes of taking over the throne. Kiki (or actually Katarina as she told them) barely survived, as evidenced by her sickeningly white appearance and allergies to almost everything. The primary reason that Kiki was exploring the Shadow City was in hopes of getting to her evil aunt’s and cousin’s house. Then Kiki would be able to reclaim what was rightfully hers: a small, pink, diamond ring with a special inscription in it which was written by her mother. This would be enough proof to exile Livia and Sidonia from Pokrovia, as well as to recover the stolen crown and save her
