Although many Americans have lost their hope in how society treats the ones that do not have enough to cover their basic needs, there is still people that care about the ones that do not have the same resources to keep a proper life like us. The “Lady in Red”, a story brought to us by the writer Richard LeMieux, this story proves that there is still people that are willing to help others with their needs. This excerpt tells the story of LeMieux, when he was homeless; it takes place on thanksgiving of 2002 in the city of Poulsbo, Washington. It shows how there still people that are willing to help others The “Lady in Red” tells the story of a man, that used to have a good life, but something in his life goes wrong and he ends up homeless. Seeing himself without money, nor gas, on thanksgiving day, he decides to go out and beg for money, but to his luck everything goes wrong and he is just humiliated by the the people he asks money from. When he was about to give up a ‘lady in red’ comes up to him and gives him sixty-four dollars and fifty cents. This was the Thanksgiving Day, of 2002, in this story he shows how people did not wanted to help him, and started to judge him right away, when they did not know the situation that he was going through. In the story LeMieux begs to four people before the “lady in red”, in words of LeMieux, stops to help him. He explains how shameful he felt at that time: “I spent the next twenty minutes trying to recover from the verbal blast I had received and could not approach anyone else”.
