Dwight Lyman Moody said "Character is what you are in the dark." In other words, you are most yourself when no one is watching. In the short story "Lather and Nothing Else," Hernando Tellez uses the barbers thoughts and actions to show his true character. In "Lather and Nothing Else," the barber is a member of a secret rebellion and the enemy captain comes into his shop. The barber is given the opportunity to kill the captain, but does not do it. Throughout the story, he struggles to remain calm while contemplating whether or not he should kill the captain, as through his thoughts he reveals he does not believe in murder.
