David Sedaris reflection on “Let It Snow” is based in North Carolina where Sedaris and his family were living. In this story Sedaris speaks about a memory that him and his siblings endured. The memory was remembered clearly due to the amount of snow on the ground which was not usual. Also, the amount of days out of school due to the weather caused this memory to stand out. Sedaris speaks about his mother’s unstable mental state. His mother’s actions are the main focus point in this story. Sedaris also elaborates about the experience on that day him and his siblings endure due to actions of the mother. Being a parent is extremely stressful and challenging. Sedaris made it sound like to an adult that they were having marital problems. Sedaris was in fifth grade which is too young to realize issues between the mother and the father. The father could be the root cause of the mother’s unable mental state. The mother was drinking earlier than normal. Mixture between the stress of the children being home for a week. Also, the absence father not helping with the children would have sent her off to kick them out of the house. Lisa made the statement of “That bitch” (Quoted Faigley 73). Did Lisa over hear the parents fighting? That phase was not learnt at school and was more than likely picked up by the parents. One of the biggest red flags to support that mother and father issue is the statement of “You are going to be in so much trouble when Dad gets home!” (Quoted Faigley 73) From that statement was the mother getting yelled at by the father? I would like to know what was happening inside of the home that Sedaris did not speak about in the story. The second red flag to support the cause of why the mother is having a breakdown. “He’d gone to work specifically to escape our mother, and between the weather and her mood, it could be hours or even days before he returned home.” (Quoted Faigley 74) A loving father would want to return home. Which again would back the claims of neglection. Children needs guidance and an adult to watch them. When that is lacking they will accomplish the wrong behavior as was read of them trying to kill Gretchen for the attention that is lacking. The statement of “it was hard to stay angry.” The children are forgiving. This as well backs claims of neglection due to the tone of that statement. They took care of their mom at the end despite how poorly the mother took care of
