The embodiment of Loomis and Ann In the novel Z for Zachariah by Robert C’ O'Brien there are two main characters introduced into the storyline. These two developments in this story are in a vast contrast to each other. One of these characters is a sixteen year old girl named Ann Burden, and the other a scientist known as Loomis. These two start off as allies in this battle against the elements but difference in personality breaks them apart. While Ann is seen as a fine representation of all that is good about the humane race, Loomis is in opposing position representing all that is wrong with our kind. Loomis is in opposition to Ann, because he seems to hold all the rivals to Anns good qualities. One of these horrific traits is shown when quoting Ann “I pulled forward again,/ heard the shirt rip and felt his fingernails tear my skin.” This statement is made by Ann when Loomis attempted to rape her. This trait that he has can be seen as him being a borderline narcissus. This is when someone feels the need to be in control at all times, and this is shown when Loomis tries to take the highest claim of control over Ann. This quality can be seen when Anns say “He wanted to maim not to kill me.” This displays his control trait, because he wanted to shoot Ann in the leg. Loomis can be seen as flawed along with the rest of humanity. Thanks to his intelligence, and built up guilt he lets Ann leave the valley, and didn’t shoot her. Loomis also gave her the direction of “.........” This helps Ann know where to go, and it shows that he wants to correct all his wrongdoings in the past, and help Ann succeed. There is also the factor of Edward to consider due to Loomis’s murdering of Edward he knows the feeling of killing. Loomis shows that he’s learned from this killing when Ann says”>>>” Loomis then doesn’t shoot her, because he remembers what it was like the first time, and doesn't want it to be repeated.
