The following essay, "A Summer Life", Gary Soto expresses his guilty and impure lifestyle as a six-year-old boy. Soto uses many literary devices during his recreation of an experience he had as a boy to show his guilt and regret; furthermore, he also exemplifies the joy and thrill that his younger self-believed. Soto's use of diction expresses the evils inside him as a six-year-old; though, he uses the device also to show his guilt now as an adult. He wasn't sinful all the time he was driven to it.

Hunters in the Snow Character Analysis – Tub More often than not, when there are a group of more than two characters made to be friends in a literary work, there is an established leadership hierarchy among them. Similar to a pack of wolves, there is an alpha, who holds the most power and influence towards the actions of the group—even if this power is not warranted by any of the positive qualities that leaders normally boast. Then, you have the beta, who is second-in-command to the alpha friend. Lastly there is the omega, the underdog of the pack, who is usually physically and/or mentally inferior in comparison to the alpha and beta friends. In “Hunters in the Snow,” by Tobias Wolff, Tub, who is also the protagonist of the story is clearly the omega.
This fantasy book, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, is a story about Kali D’Angelo who hunts unworldly creatures such as demons, hellhounds, and other creatures every other 24 hours. In the book, Skylar was definitely a minor character who had major effects on Kali and the decisions she makes. At the beginning of the story, Kali was lonely and did not care to have many friends at school. She did not bother to have friends because she thought they might not understand her killing demons. This kept her distant from others until Skylar came along.
Julia Leslie Mrs. Ford ENG4U April 24, 2024 Echoes of Upbringing In Cedar Bowers’ book, Astra, the reader is immersed in Astra’s journey of life through the lens of multiple people who are important at certain points in her life. In the narrative, the debate between nurture and nature is an intricate concept as an individual begins to understand the character of Astra. While genetics are a big part of who she is, it is how she grew up and her experiences that crafted her identity. One’s upbringing shapes who they become in terms of personality traits, emotional intelligence, and relationships, as demonstrated by the character Astra. Astra has an intense personality, which is related to how she was raised without any support system.
In his autobiographical narrative, A Summer Life, Gary Soto recreates his experience of his guilty six-year-old self, who stole an apple pie. Through his narrative Gary Soto retells his guilt through the usage of contrast, imagery, and allusion. Soto uses contrast such as “hell, holy...shadow,angle,light” in order to show the reader his knowledge of what he thinks the meaning of good and bad is. In paragraph two he states that “Boredom made me sin”(Soto 7). This quote shows that Soto knew what the consequences of stealing is, but he still decides to steal the apple pie.
Over the last couple of days in class we have discussed F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story “Winter Dreams”. This short story explores several themes such as reality vs idealism and over expectations. These themes communicates through the use of various literary devices such as irony, symbolism, allegories and imagery. Through the use of these literary devices each character is brought to life and given its own type of personality. One quote that explores how the main character, Dexter, is given a unique personality states “The helpless ecstasy of losing himself in her charm was a powerful opiate rather than a tonic”.
In the novel Midwinterblood by Marcus Sedgwick there were several details that were intriguing to me. One of the many is when Eric Seven, the main character in the first story, woke up to freshly made breakfast made for him every morning but no one was around. Another thing that was interesting was Merle. Merle is a women Eric feels he knows but cannot quite remember her, she shows up randomly every where throughout the first story and it is very suspicious. Lastly, the end to the first story was very thought provoking to sleep "I, thinks Eric Seven, have lived this before" (54).
Literary Analysis Suspense. It's what makes us sit on the edge of our seats at movies, or has us biting our nails as we read. It’s the backbone behind any classic horror film where the babysitter keeps getting unknown phone calls about checking the children and she asks the police to trace the call only to get a call back saying it's coming from upstairs.
Similarly, In The Hammer of Thor the main character Magnus Chase fights Norse Giants during his quest to retrieve Thor's stolen hammer. The Hammer of Thor takes place in present time, however Magnus Chase travels through several different worlds searching for the Thor's hammer. Such as, when
Although I liked this book, there were things I didn’t like, and some things I did like. One thing I liked about this book was that it was accurate to Norse myths. All of the events and characters that involved Norse myths, were completely accurate. For example, Magnus is attacked by “Surt” (Riordan 42) or “The Black One”(Riordan 42). Surt is a “real” person in Norse Myths.
