This book examines life through the lens of a man who was considered "white" in certain situations, and "black" in other situations. This created a viewpoint of life through both sides of the "color line" and gives insight as to how the minority is treated in a majority. This can be illustrated in a larger scale as a social problem for anyone during this time that was a member of the minority in a majority area. The level of racism that Gregory faced escalated when he moved to Muncie and created an even greater level of insight as to how people treat individuals of other races. Gregory begins to experience a sense of exclusion from society, his school, and his peers. This issue of exclusion can be seen as the reason why black people at this time were socially and economically stagnant. The best sociological theory for approaching the minority versus majority issue would be through interactionism theory. In my own words, this theory examines the interactions between individuals and how those interactions shape perspectives towards others. Being a part of the majority during the earlier times of his life, and a part of the minority later in his life, gave him insight into both spectrums of the racial line. The majority and minority issue can be explained by the interactionism theory and individuals' ideas that they form towards a group of people. When Gregory made the decision to be black, he also faced exclusion along with discrimination, and both of these can be explained by the social exclusion theory.
