Jean Zimmerman wrote The Women of the House: How A Colonial She-Merchant Built A Mansion, A Fortune, And A Dynasty and Harcourt, Inc. published the book in 2006. The anthology has 338 pages of the actual book and 402 including the prologue, afterword, notes, sources, and index. This nonfiction, hard-back paper book portrayed women’s roles both within and outside of the home starting in the late seventeenth century and ending in the early nineteenth century. The analysis begins with the lives of Margaret and her descendants’, followed by the influence businesswomen and their contributions had on the city of New Amsterdam, as well as the American Revolution in later years.
Everyday Use by Alice Walker and Eudora Welty in A Worn Path are two short stories that share many similarities. One similarity between the two stories that caught my attention was protection and love. Both women take care of a child that went through an incident. In the story Everyday Use by Alice Walker, Mama is a poor African American woman who is considered to be very strong and manly.
Everyone knows the name and deeds of John Wilkes Booth, who became the first person to successfully assassinate a United States president, as well as one of the most memorable names in American history. Fewer know of Booth’s several conspirators, eight to be exact, who provided the former actor with the supplies and support necessary to commit the heinous crime. Even fewer still know the name of Mary Surratt, a Southern loyalist who, on July 7, 1865, joined Booth on the list of infamous American historical figures by becoming the first woman to be hanged in the still-juvenile country. Surratt ran a boardinghouse in Washington D.C. where the majority of the conspiratory meetings were held in 1865, leading President Johnson to declare Mary Surratt had “kept the nest that hatched the egg” (Norton, 1996). Surratt’s role as the primary supplier and facilitator of the assassination plot has led many to declare her hanging as entirely justified, while other say mercy should have been take for a variety of reasons.
Loss, obliteration, longing and transcience constitute the recurring theme of Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping. I am writing this in hopes that this will serve as a testimony on Samantha Rowe’s behalf. I am hopeful that this will be considered as an adequate testimony in lieu of me being present. I have had the pleasure of knowing Samantha for three months, and I consider her a great person who places value on integrity and honesty. This seems to be something I would expect to be a joke with the writing staff and was never corrected or caught. I believe the word “for” is missing from the approved text, between the word “cooking” and “her”. I wonder if someone got fired over this mistake?

In the pastoralization of housework, woman found a new dynamic in the family system by becoming influencers. Boydston writes, “‘...in which wives were described as deities “who presides over the sanctities of domestic life, and administer its sacred rights….”” With the romanization of housework woman found themselves placed on a higher pedestal, and with this newly found power, women were able to influence their husband’s decisions. Women during the Antebellum period were described as “holy and pious” and they were seen as the more religious being out of the two sexes, so it was customary for women to use their power to help the family stay on the right path. Mrs. A. J. Graves supported this idea and directly connects women’s role of taking care of the home to a station which God and nature assigned her.
In the 1970’s women were expected to stay at home and take care of the household. They were usually not expected to further their education, but instead take care of the children or tend to their husbands’ needs. In 1972 Judy Brady decided to let the readers of Ms. Magazine know how she felt about her “duties”. In her short essay, “Why I Want a Wife,” Brady uses pathos to connect and appeal to the reader’s emotions while explaining why she wants a wife.
In her marriage it shows a comparison to the majority of women’s issue that does the cleaning in a relationship. Grose endure her reason by discussing that men does not commit to cleaning. In the short story “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves,” author Karen Russell develops the narrator, Claudette, through the use of five “stages” to show her progression from her wolf identity to the human culture. This short story follows a group of girls raised by wolf parents through their journey at St. Lucy’s, which is a rehabilitation center for human children raised by wolf parents. Throughout their time at St. Lucy’s, the girls are expected to experience five distinct stages as they adapt. Each of these stages is described by a fictional text entitled The Jesuit Handbook on Lycanthropic Culture Shock. The nuns at St. Lucy’s use it as a guide for teaching their students.
