Speak was written in 1999 by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book is about Melinda, a freshman just starting high school. Melinda starts school off with no friends, she lost the ones she had over the summer. A traumatic event causes Melinda to shut everyone out, and not speak to anyone. Growing up usually takes time, but Melinda is rushed into maturity too soon and must help others do the same.
“Speak,” is a novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. The setting is in Syracuse, New York in the early 2000’s. Melinda Sordino is the narrator of the story and is a freshman at Merryweather High School. During the summer before her freshman year, she goes to a party with her close friends filled with alcohol and music. At the party, she drinks many beers and becomes intoxicated.
In the novel, Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the chapter prey shows that the main character, Melinda, learns from her mistake and stands up against her worst nightmare, Andy Evans. After algebra class, Melinda goes to her closet and grabs her Maya Angelou poster. After Melinda is finished grabbing her things from her closet, Andy Evans pushes Melinda back into her closet, “somebody slams into my chest back into the closet. The lights flicks and the door closes. I am trapped with Andy Evans” (193).

Some people are Ivy, Heather, Melinda, Rachel, Mr Freeman, Mr. Neck, and Hair women. She has no friends, she is an outcast. Melinda can talk to her parents, her teachers, and her friends but she doesn't for a long time but does later.
In the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson a girl Melinda is stuck with a deep dark secret in her. Melinda has just entered high school and there is an incident that happened to her over the summer. Melinda ended up losing all her friends, and becoming depressed. This incident was a senior at her school raping Melinda at a party. Melinda’s friend Rachel had gotten her into a senior party in the summer.
Out of the many problems we have in the world today, one main problems is poverty. Poverty has been around for thousands of years now, and people began to fight it as early as the 1960s. When Lyndon B. Johnson became president, he took it upon himself to fight poverty by creating the Great Society Plan. In the plan, many new programs and jobs were created to assist Americans living in poverty and to help improve their lifestyles. President Johnson’s Great Society Plan improved many poversed Americans lives by helping them obtain an education, find a job to provide for their families, and helping them with medical funds.
Just like Kingston and Marin, language has shaped the person that I have become and how I view it. To discover the true power of language one must experience its advantages as well as its disadvantages. Kingston, a Chinese-American professor and writer, equipped herself with “The Language of Silence” as a child. She expressed how she was quiet for most of her childhood; at first, it was something good, it was an advantage, a way to observe. She was not aware she needed to speak.
In the novel Speak, the author explores the effects of trauma and the power of finding one's voice. The main character, Melinda, experiences significant character development throughout the story. Initially withdrawn and silenced, Melinda slowly grows into a courageous and resilient young woman, as she learns to confront her past and face the challenges of depression. Throughout her book Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson dives deep into the theme of character development which is shown through a rape victim, showing her transformation from a broken and voiceless teenager to a survivor who reclaims her identity and speaks her truth.
In other words, without any word or language to define objects or ideas, people simply would not have anything to remember it by. Not only does language allow people to appreciate everything our world has to offer, but it also prevents people from miscommunicating. The narrator only begins to realize this after viewing the total eclipse, in which she notices
Significance of Reputation in Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Robert Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde illustrates the significance of concealing your secrets and desires in order to maintain a flawless reputation. He creates distinctive characters with various reputations and contrasts their abilities in retaining one. Stevenson emphasizes this through Hyde’s actions, when portraying Utterson’s flawless reputation, the contrasting vulnerability to desires between Utterson and Jekyll and the creation of Hyde.
It was what separates us from other living things. Richard Lederer wrote, “While some of these other species possessed the physical apparatus to talk, only Homo sapiens did speech tremble into birth..” in the article “The Humanness of Language”. His article is about how language is what made us humans, so if we take this universal asset to us other things follow it including comfort. Humans are so use to the ability to communicate with others, that ability is taken away we lose a sense of our humanity.
In Lera Boroditsky 's "How Does Our Language Shape the Way We Think" the purpose of the essay is apparent from the second paragraph. "Language is a uniquely human gift central to our experience of being human" she explains, so that the reader understands how language affects ones thoughts and day to day lives (2). Boroditsky 's use of empirical evidence, factual information, organizational structure, understanding and construction upon thoughts that disprove her purpose, and light tone all aide in accomplishing her purpose. Each of these methods help convince the audience that, " Language is central to our experience of being human, and the languages we speak profoundly shapes the way we think, the way we see the world, the way we live our lives" (Boroditsky 10).
Language is communication and vice versa. It can also helps with everyday tasks such as, explaining issues and procedures exchanging ideas or learning ideas. Being knowledgeable about language is a key for successful communication in relationships and in the workplace. I would say that without language, we would not be able to communicate.
According to this view, he is expressing the idea that language, as powerful as it is, might not always be efficient enough to explain a sensation. In sum, then, the issue whether language constructs our thought or vice versa. My own view is that language does indeed construct thought. Though I concede that language shapes our thought, I still maintain a view that language might not always be powerful enough in certain situations. I have had several encounters where language has the potential to really hurt someone, or even me.
Language is an important part of our life. Language and communication cannot separate. People use the language as a means of communication to express their ideas and feelings. They communicate either with each other using language in every social interaction; communicate with others directly or indirectly in the spoken and written form. Therefore, language is an important thing of communication in social life.
