In Matched the author, Ally Condie, uses mystery and character development to build intense drama between characters. When a member in the society turns 17 all the girls and boys in my society get their match, it is a match form outside their community, but Cassia got matched with her best friend Xander (he is from her community). When she looks at his profile another face pops up, and it was Ky. The author focuses on building a love interest between Cassia and Ky leaving drama between all three characters: Xander, Cassia, and Ky.
Cassias parents’ relationship is not working out. So, they aren’t correct matches for each other. Which leads Cassia to wonder, on page 162, “So their match isn’t perfect at all. The moment I think it, I wish it back. If their match isn’t perfect what are the chances mine will be?” (Condie, 162). According to what Cassia thought, she might still have a chance with Ky. Cassia gets to know Ky throughout leisure activities which makes her develop a forbidden love interest. Cassia has a choice between Ky and Xander. She is always pondering whether she should break the rules and go with Ky or stick with Xander. Shown on page 228, “Xander is my match and my oldest friend and one of the best people I know. When I kissed him, it was sweet. I am drawn to him and tied to him with cords of a thousand memories. Ky is not my Match, but he may have been. He’s the one who taught me how to write my name, how to keep the poems, how to build a tower of rocks that looks like it should fall but doesn’t. I have never kissed him and I don’t know if I ever will, but I think it might be more than sweet” (Condie, 228). Cassia lists the pros and cons between characters Ky and Xander to create drama in the primary
