Courtney Summers, author of the book All The Rage, writes about some of the issues that teens face on a daily basis. She writes about Romy Grey and the problems that she faces in her life. Throughout the novel Romy struggles with recurring memories and visions of the time she is raped. She endures the pain and suffering of it everyday. To make things worse no one in her town believes that she was raped.
What situations caused these emotions? She felt bad that her oldest son had to wear the same clothes over and over. Depressed from the meeting she had with the social worker, because it didn’t go the way she intended it to. Worried if she can provide for her family once she stops receiving government assistance. In the novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao women play an important role. The three main women Beli, La Inca and Lola help to define the novel. Throughout the novel women are seen as sexual objects to men. The dictator Trujillo makes it seem like it’s okay for men to objectify women. Women are portrayed as inferior to men because of how powerful the dictator is.
This is seen by the actions she takes to get to her goal, statements she makes towards her family members, and how she responds to her family when they are troubled. Mama has lived in her apartment for a long time with her family and is about to get enough money to change that. An example of Mama’s motivation to achieve her goal is shown when Ruth, her daughter-in-law and Mama are talking about what Mama would do with the insurance money. Mama states, “Been thinking that we maybe could meet the notes on a little old two-story somewhere, with a yard where Travis could play in the summertime, if we use part of the insurance for a down payment and everybody kind of pitch in” (563). Mama is suggesting to Ruth of what could be a better future for her son and their family.
ANALYSIS As mentioned beforehand, deception damages a child’s self-esteem. This situation often happens in a dysfunctional family. Initially, the narrator was seeing her mother for the first time since the divorce which led to result her behaviour fear. The narrator missed the tender care that the mother had shown to her family. However, she also kept in mind the mother’s reaction when the father approved the divorce and her threats of setting fire to herself with kerosene.
The family would always ask “why us?” or “maybe it’s a curse” or “she was fine for years”, and the list would go on and on. (225) She didn’t feel like she belonged and her family
This quote shows that even though Mairs sometimes has difficulty accepting her illness, she knows that there is a growing acceptance of people who must deal with the difficulties that she faces. This ultimately lends a hopeful and positive tone to an otherwise serious and depressing section of her essay. This contrast in tone, but general feeling of hope is key to the type of emotions that Nancy Mairs is trying to educate her readers about. Mair is successful in using multiple rhetorical strategies to connect with the reader.
In the text, “Treatise on Tolerance” by Francois-Marie Arouet, known as Voltaire, he implored Christians on 1763 of religion understanding and tolerance. Through series of comparisons, Voltaire demonstrated religion hypocrisy utilizing religion to incite violence and persecutions. First, he identified with Christians through narratives which demonstrated similarities between religion. Then, he measured the existence of men as minute compared immensity of the theological ideas. These similarities and measurements of men implored not only religious tolerance but also to stop using violence or persecution to nonbelievers.
