When people are told that they are doing something wrong, even if they do not show it externally, internally it hurts a little. Clare Boothe Luce is about to criticize a group of journalists, people who most likely went to college and majored in this field of study. Before Luce begins her critique, she wants her audience to remember that she herself did not choose to do this, but the audience picked her to critique them. With that being said, Luce is allowed to “throw rocks” at the audience and they should not be upset by it, that does not mean they will not be though. In Luce’s introduction to her speech, she warns her audience of journalists that they picked her to come and criticize them. Even though Luce will be telling them what they do wrong, Luce lets them know that they understand what to do and that it is very difficult, they just have not learned but she will teach them. Also, Luce states that “if there is much that is wrong with the American press, there is also much that is right with it.” When saying this, Luce lets the audience know that although there are things that they are doing wrong, there are also things that they are doing right. By saying this, Luce gives the audience a dose of confidence before going into her speech and
