It is asked “what is good journalism all about?” This question is not one that needs a direct answer, rather than sowing a seed in the audience’s mind. As they too are all journalists, it is each and everyone of their tasks to know and understand the fundamentals of journalism. These efforts being to achieve, to explain, and to strive for truth in all aspects. The question prompted by Luce is exactly what is needed to open their minds. Because of the heavy theme of her message, she wants to establish commonality and friendliness between herself and the crowd. As any speaker would, she starts of by stating how “happy and flattered” she is “to be a guest of honor”. Luce wants to be here and is acknowledging the merit in being allowed to speak. The audience understands Luce will not be vain in what she says, as she has set herself up to not be viewed as prideful. While speaking to a crowd she knows will get unsettled by her coming words, Luce makes sure to not patronize them. With all the criticism approaching their ability to do their job, she ensures them that “there is also so much that is right”.
