In Lauren Morrill’s book Meant to be two teenagers who are nothing alike find a new friendship as they travel throughout London on a class trip. Julia Lichtenstein, also known as “Book Licker” and Jason Lippincott two young teenagers with secrets to hide find a way to reveal them and find themselves through side journeys and some accidental side assignments. Julia is a young sixteen year old girl who is bound to not break a single rule. She wants to keep her 4.0 GPA while harboring feelings still residing from her father’s death. Julia is ready to set out and enjoy London reliving her parents dreams and adventures but she is not ready for who she had to stick with during the duration of the trip. Enter Jason, a rowdy teenage boy who is bound to embarrass Julia to no end. Jason likes to make up rumors and is overall a big flirt. With his fiery red hair Julia despises him. She wants nothing to do with Jason at all. However, Julia is bound to not break a single rule. Julia is the kind of person who has a not of preconceived notions. Throughout the story you can see Julia’s personal growth. She believes everyone on her school trip because she thinks they have no potential. Julia thinks they are all clothes obsessed or too dumb to associate with. As the trip continues Julia realizes-mostly because of Jason- that the things she thought before were not true after all.
