Emiliano Zapata, famous Mexican revolutionary, has been depicted in many different ways. Some see him as a hero while others see him as a bandit. In “Mexican Bandits at Close View,” Edwin Emerson writes about Zapata in a negative manner. Throughout the article Emerson uses the word bandit to describe Zapata. Through the use of bandit Emerson portrays Zapata in a manner that is uninformed. Edwin Emerson’s “Mexican Bandits at Close View” does not portray Emiliano Zapata correctly due to its historical inaccuracies, failure to mention vital details of Zapatismo, and potential bias against Zapata. He shows Zapata and his actions, while missing out on his ideals. A key moment in the movement that Emerson withholds from his article is that of the Plan de Ayala. This is the centerpiece to the Zapatismo movement. With the Plan de Ayala it shows that this is a revolutionary movement and not just a matter of man trying to gain power. Zapata was not a bandit, but a true revolutionary hero. In the Plan de Ayala, Zapata presents the key idea of his movement and that is land reform. Emerson fails to mention land reform at any point in his article. It explains why Zapata was conducted this revolutionary movement. This comes back to page 238 of Emerson’s article that mentions the turning of weapons to Madero. Emerson made the point that Zapata refused to give weapons over due to not receiving the full sum of the money he wanted. In actuality he was hesitant to trust Madero to carry the land reform that he desired. If Madero did not follow through with his promise of land reform then Zapata would start the revolution again. By passing over this topic it allows Emerson to present Zapata in a bandit manner. When one thinks of a bandit they think of someone who is in it for the money and without a plan.
