Mrs. H. T. Miller, a lonely widow living a life of darkness in the short story “Miriam” by Truman Capote, tells her story during one of the most vulnerable times of her life. Mrs. H. T. Miller, also referred to as Miriam in the story, is the protagonist who experiences consistent illusions of her younger self. Due to this, she feels as if she is going insane so she seeks help but the neighbors are unable to give her the help she is looking for. The 61-year old womens background of living alone for such a period of time has affected how she interacts with individuals and has created tremendous conflicts within herself.
