Born in New Orleans on September 30, 1924, Truman Capote went on to become an author for Other Voices, Other Rooms, as well as, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Grass Harp, and many more. Years later Capote spent his life as a celebrity, however, he struggled with drug addiction. In 1984 in Los Angeles, California, Capote died of liver failure.

From the very beginning
Truman Capote begins the passage by describing Holcomb, Kansas as a far away town with not much to offer and begins to speak about the bland vibes that the province gives to show what it was like before the Clutter murders impacted the area. Indeed, it is quite accurate that Capote doesn’t think much of the insignificant town as he first begins to describe it. The author recalls Holcomb by saying that there is not much to see.
Maggie on the other hand, is characterized by her unattractiveness and timidity. Her skin is scarred from the fire that had happened ten or twelve years ago. Those scars she has on her body in the same way have scarred her soul leaving her ashamed. She “stumbles” in her reading, but Mrs. Johnson loves her saying she is sweet and is the daughter she can sing songs at church with, but more so that Maggie is like an image of her. In the hour that the story is told, it ranges from showing Mrs. Mallard different reactions to learning of her husbands death to him surprisingly showing up alive and eventually her untimely death from a heart disease. Although only a brief period of time is shown, many emotions are revealed through the third person omniscient point of view. This point of view shows more than just the protagonists thoughts and is not limited to one person. It allows the readers to know something about Mrs. Mallard that she does not as the story ends after Mrs. Mallard has already died.
