Mountains Beyond Mountain by Tracy Kidder examines Dr. Paul Farmer’s journey in helping populations from infectious diseases in Haiti, Peru, and Russia. It tracks the life of a Harvard medical school graduate whose goal is to cure the world from infectious diseases. Kidder joins Paul Farmer, also known as Dokté Paul on his journeys to there various countries. He comments on his medical decisions as well as treatment on impoverished communities containing countless infectious diseases. Kidder examines Farmer’s character as well as learns from his values and beliefs. Paul Farmer works in various countries trying to rid similar diseases. He believes that medicine can connect the world together because many countries have the same problems relating to the treatment of infectious diseases. According to Kidder, Farmers tactics in doing this are somewhat unpresidented. No one has ever tried to connect the world the way Farmer has. Kidder questions Paul by saying “How can you expect other to replicate what you’re doing here? What would be your answer to that?” (42). Kidder believes that no one else in the world will be able to replicate what Farmer does in Haiti without his help. Farmer answers when “He turned back, and smiling sweetly, said, “F*** you.”(42). Farmer believes in doctors all around the world, and thinks that many others are able to replicate what he has done.
