Farley Mowat, the author of Never Cry Wolf, was born on May 12, 1921 in Belleville, Ontario. Mowat, from a young age, had been heavily influenced by nature. As a teenager, Farley wrote an informational column, focusing mainly on birds for the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, which was his town’s local newspaper. Mowat’s love for nature had to be subsided put aside for a while, because in 1939 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant into the Second Battalion during World War II. On July 10, 1943, he was a subaltern in command of a rifle platoon, and participated in the initial landings of Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Sicily. Mowat accepted a job as an Intelligence Officer at Battalion Headquarters, later moving to Brigade Headquarters. Mowat stayed in Italy with the 1st Canadian Infantry Division for most of the war, and was eventually promoted to the rank of captain. Mowat served in the army from 1939-1945. After serving in the army Mowat attended the University of Toronto where his son Sandy wrote the student newspaper. Farley graduated from the University of Toronto and got a job working for the Canadian government. He was sent to the Arctic to study the behavior of the Arctic wolf because Arctic wolves were supposedly slaughtering the caribou population. He loved nature and had tried to pursue his passion from an early age by writing a newspaper column about birds for the Saskatoon Star Phoenix. He learned many things on his journey and wanted his discoveries to be published so that the world could be more educated about wolves. At this current time most people who lived in Canada believed that wolves were blood lusty animals that massacred caribou for no apparent reason. Farley discovered that this wasn’t true and wolves could not even catch a healthy adult caribou since the caribou even at the age of only three weeks can outrun all except for the swiftest of wolves. Most people also believed that wolves attacked humans often and for no apparent reason. Mowat discovered that this was also another misbelief for wolves generally avoided contact with humans and only wolves that were truly desperate for food and would die the next day from starvation would ever attack a human. Many people also believed that wolves lived very close together and roamed around the landscape in packs. Mowat proved that this was a lie because when he went to the Arctic ,wolves lived in groups with odd numbers with the smallest being three and the largest being seven. These wolves were mates except for the one odd wolf who did not have a mate. In every group that Farley saw he saw they were in small groups and the
