Born in Johnstown, New York, Richard Russo's first interest-which was writing fiction-was sparked at a very young age, this interest carried with him throughout his youth and in 1980 Russo received his PhD in American Literature at the University of Arizona. At first Russo wanted to specialize in writing academic nonfiction, but decided shortly after working on his dissertation that he was more interested in writing fiction. He spent a year putting his fiction writing skills to the test while at the same time working on his dissertation. This led to Russo earning his master of fine arts degree in creative writing in 1981. Not only was Russo a proclaimed fiction writer, but was also a former fiction writer at the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a former professor of creative writing at Colby College in Waterville, Maryland. …show more content…
Since then Russo has been recognized by numerous critics as the most important writer about Main Street, USA. This may be for the fact that most of Russo's works are aimed towards working class life, which gives him a vast and wide ranged audience. In 2002, Russo received the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished fiction by an American author on his novel Empire Falls. This novel deals with life in a small town. It takes place in a textile and logging town in Maine called Empire Falls. The novel's main character is none other than Miles Roby, the manager of a failing restaurant known as the Empire Grill. On top of work being bad, Miles also deals with possible divorce, ailing mother, and he must constantly worry about his daughter, Tick.
