First and foremost, this book reveals various themes, which are identical but may have a different purpose. However, I believe the author wrote this book to bring attention to racial injustice and discrimination that takes place in the United States of America and all around the world. Throughout history, from ancient civilizations up to modern day, have experienced some type of discrimination, due to race, gender, religion, beliefs. As a Muslim, this discrimination has exploded in the early 2000’s ever since the 9/11 Attacks. On the other hand, African Americans have experienced the most discrimination, throughout the entire world. I believe that Magoon did a fantastic job relating discrimination to modern day events. For example, in the projects or ghettos of New York City, Connecticut, Boston, Atlanta, or Alabama tons of fights happen from gang violence. In other words, Magoon introduces the readers to how these fights possibly could have occurred. Before jumping into too many assumptions, I do not have prior knowledge if Magoon is raised in the ‘environment’ she describes in the book. However, the ability to capture events and actions of gang violence and incorporate it into the book is fantastic. In addition, this ability allows the readers to draw the central message, which is fight against discrimination.
