Growing up is a part of life , but with growing up we go through phases and life experiences. Author Gary Soto tells a little bit if his similar life experiences in his two stories “Broken Chain”, “Seventh Grade”, and small narrative poem “Oranges”. “Broken Chain” is about a boy named Alfonso who was insecure. One day he meets a girl named Sandra who he went to school with and thought she was cute. Alfonso asks her is she would want to go on a bike ride and she agrees. Alfonso said he would ask his brother but his brother for his bike and said no .The day of the bike ride with all the anger and frustration Alfonso broke his chain and had no bike but just when he was about to tell Sandra what had happened his brother lets him borrow it . It says this in paragraph 2 “Teresa is going to be my girl this year”. Victor was insecure about what he said to her to try to impress her in paragraph 18 & 19 it says “She smiled and said “Hi Victor”. He smiled back and said “yeah thats me.”. His brown face blushed. Why hadn't he said “Hi teresa” or “How was your summer” or something nice.” Victor was very insecure about what to say to her or if he had said the right things. In addition, Victor would try to impress Teresa or try to be with her every chance he could get he even picked french as one of his electives so he would be in the same class as her in paragraph 2 it says “Besides Teresa a girl he liked since they were in catechism class at Saint Theresa's was taking french too. With any luck they would be in the same class.” this supports the idea that he would impress her or that he would do anything to be with her. Additionally in paragraph “ Mr.Buller asked if anyone knew french Victor raised his hand wanting to impress Teresa” he wanted to impress Teresa by pretending to know french . But the teacher knew that he did not know French but did not call him out on it .
