During the duration of the novella Passing; the readers saw Irene dealing with various internal and external conflicts, from the irritation of having her old friend Clare enter her life at the worst time possible, to her duty to the black society, and needing to keep Clare’s secret from her husband Jack. She even when as far, as to overlook, that her own marriage was in danger and put Clare’s needs in front of her own. Irene was lured into a trap, but being a noble woman with her values set straight did not allowed her to back down. She understood her stand in society and her duty to her fellow African Americans. Because of this loyalty Irene found herself in a hole, one she had digged with her own two hands. And finally she broked.

Yet, she was first a woman and a wife with a family to keep together. The content push and pull that she had with Clare from wanting to help her integrate back into the society or wanting to tell Clare’s husband Jack about the reality of her heritage. That was the last drop, not only she give her husband the perfect excuse to be around clare but also end up in Clare getting her way once again. This was a battle the Irene couldn’t won by herself as she had already lost. All thanks to her ego and lack of feeling for her husband
