Lucille Parkinson McCarthy, author of the article, “A Stranger in Strange Lands: A College Student Writing Across the Curriculum”, conducted an experiment that followed one student over a twenty-one month period, through three separate college classes to record his behavioral changes in response to each of the class’s differences in their writing expectations. The purpose was to provide both student and professor a better understanding of the difficulties a student faces while adjusting to the different social and academic settings of each class. Chapter Eight Summary In chapter eight of Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie and his father enter their 5th camp they have been to called Buchenwald. Elie's father expressed great weakness, he didn't want to carry on anymore. Elie said ; “He had become childlike: weak, frightened, vulnerable” (Wiesel, 105). Suddenly the sirens sounded and Elie followed the running crowd, not realizing he left his father alone until the next morning.
I was in a chess tournament about two years ago against many people in my school because I joined a chess club. Unfortunately, I didn 't get far in my last one and was hoping to be better this time. I was doing well until I saw a seventh grader paired with me in the semifinals. I was very nervous because last time I went against a seventh grader I lost and was knocked out from the tournament. But this time I was a lot better at chess than before so I had not a lot of doubts even though a lot of people thought that the grade seven was going to win.
In Anita Garland’s essay “Let’s Really Reform Our Schools” the author begins by telling us that high schools in the U.S are failure. Garland argues that “the pressure to look fashionable and act cool outweighs any concern for learning.” She tells us that current safety measures like metal detectors and security guards have not be enough to beat the conflict of criminals in school. She claims that school ideas have to be reconstructed. Anita Garland tells us that the essential change to school structure should be school attendance; stop making it mandatory.

High school students looking to graduate encounter difficult decisions, and when making those decisions they need to look forward to hypothesize the outcome. America generally believes that a college degree is basically a requirement just for entering the working middle class. According to the essay “Should Everyone Go to College?” by Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill, higher education is not a great investment for every student.
The Game of School: Why We All Play It, How It Hurts Kids, and What It Will Take to Change It by Robert L. Fried is a great tool for identifying challenges in school systems and planning school reform. This book explains in great depth the problems faced by students and educators in schools today and ends with a call to action for solving these problems. Some major concepts that arise frequently throughout the book are time being wasted, students feeling powerless and the prioritization of test scores over authentic learning. Time is wasted by everyone in school and is wasted in various ways, for example students are given busy work and teachers rush through a curriculum while students learn nothing. Students, while they are the most important stakeholders, feel as though they have no control over their education.
As a reader one has to know what to look for and identify the main idea and understand what the author is trying to argue. Before taking Writing 10 I felt I was a good reader and able to identify the main idea in a prompt, but little did I really know. After going through the research process and trying to identify reliable sources I have essentially cut out the unnecessary information and I go straight to the idea or argument being made by the author. As of before, I would focus on every detail of the writing. Having been assigned readings and having discussions about the readings during class, I soon realized that writing is about an argument being made with supporting evidence.
As a former AP Lang student, I feel that this class has been very beneficial for me in that it has allowed me to apply the techniques and strategies I learned last year toward more relevant subjects. Having the freedom of choosing topics to write about for our various essays made this class more enjoyable than the other English classes that I have taken. AP Lang focused heavily on the techniques of writing solid essays, but instead of writing about useful topics, we analyzed the short stories provided on the exams. Writing a personal narrative essay was very helpful in my college application process and allowed me to employ the same kind of strategies that I learned in class into my college essays.
Reading and Writing are Important Stephen King's "Reading to Write" (72) give details about King's methods on becoming a better writer. To become a better writer, you must read a whole heap of books. There are so many other things you can read other than books like magazines, newspapers, labels on food, and papers. As a student in college, I understand Stephen King's methods. Reading and Writing will help me further my college education, and it will help me get to my goal.
Personal Literacy Narrative Reading and writing is a tool everybody needs in their lifetime the basic reading and writing skills are used on a daily base no matter what field you plan to study. Reading and writing are taught at a young age. I personally was taught by preschool I noticed on how I grew with my writing and how I became a better reader and writer throughout my life I personal love reading and writing it’s a way for everyone to express themselves through their choice of words. Everybody learns how to read and write differently some students tend to be stronger than others, personally speaking I feel I tend to be higher in reading then writing.
Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I did not worry about preparing for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not enough for college courses. Writing is not just a skill that I will need for English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate with professors.
Reading and writing influence the way that I interact with the world. I learn new things from reading and writing, which in turn help me communicate with others because I am learning new facts and skills. My relationship with literacy is a very close one. It's helped me in many areas of my life, such as being more social. Without literacy in my life, I don't know what I'd do.
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
Throughout the years I have realized that reading has changed my writing skills. From my earlier years to solely writing what my teacher would want, to now actually putting my own point of view and how I feel into my writing. It’s the same as when I am reading a book and I put
The reasons are that it is through reading that a person is going to be able to discover new ideas, concepts, meet new places and people that time, money or reality sometimes prohibited. It develops your communication tools and expands you knowledge and the conception around you. First of all, reading gives you a wonderful opportunity to learn about other cultures and places of interest in the world. It gives you an insight into the diversity of our world and the chance to visualize it.
