“There is nothing on this Earth more prized than friendship”- Thomas Aquinas. In the book, Peak, by Roland Smith readers are introduced to a boy named Peak who is a climber. Peak creates many new relationships with people while on Everest, but is still hanging on to a very important relationship. Peak becomes friends with this boy named Sun-jo, creates a stronger relationship with his father, and while he is on the mountain he misses his twin sisters more than anything else. Sun-jo is a Nepalese boy who is a descendant of a Sherpa. The first time Sun-jo and Peak met was when Sun-jo was sent to bring Peak to Zopa, a Buddhist monk. Peak was wearing nothing but his boxers when he opened the door, but Sun-jo didn’t care because he understood how exciting it is to try on new climbing gear. This was the first step in their great friendship. Once Sun-jo and Peak were on their way up to base camp Zopa thought it would be better for them to train so he made them walk with heavy packs on their back and climb a wall every time that they stopped. Peak knew this was so he could gain strength, but Zopa didn’t want him to do it alone so Sun-jo was dragged along. Sun-jo never complained about this and they talked and bonded the whole way to base camp. This was important in their relationship because they really got to know each other and become better friends.
