In the article “Punishment or Child Abuse” by Michael Eric Dyson, he says that beating children has been a depressingly familiar habit in the black families since our arrival in the New World. Black parents have been beating their children to keep them from misbehaving for centuries. If a young black slave would act out, the white slave owner had the power to send that kid to his death for even the slightest offense. Even today, many black parents fear that a loose tongue or flash of temper could get their child killed by a trigger-happy cop. They would rather beat their children than bury them. I’m talking the occasional slight slap on the butt when they act out, not grabbing your belt and whipping them so hard that it leaves bruises and welts. Little kids act out all the time because they don’t know what to do and what not to do yet. Once they act out, you spank them so they know that when I do something I shouldn’t be doing, I get an “Ouchy.” Parents have been beating their kids for hundreds of years. My dad tells me stories of how my grandma would punish them if they did something bad. She would take them out to the old oak tree in the backyard and have them pick a branch so she could whip them. If my dad chose a weak, broken branch, then my grandma would pick out the biggest and toughest branch instead. My dad doesn’t hate my grandma for doing those terrible things to him. In the long run it shaped my dad into the tough, nice guy he is today. When I was younger, my parents would spank me if I did something bad and look at me now, I’m a nice, respectful kid who follows the rules and is taking college classes as a junior in high school. In the bible, it says that “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.” Proverbs
