The article “Racist Aussie goes on hate rant at bus stop” shows the consequence of the Young Australian – New Zealander experiencing the direct verbal racism at a bus stop in Brisbane. A 19-year-old Brisbane man has captured the moment of the woman who confronted him at a bus stop due to his New Zealander’s appearance despite the fact that he was born and raised in Australia. The young man secretly recorded the woman referring him to a foreigner and told him to “go back to New Zealand”. When people accept the oppression, they will be limit in choice by the oppressor and as a result, the oppressed are less likely to make a systemic change (Cuyjet, Howard-Hamilton, & Cooper, 2012). In the case scenario, the oppressor did not acknowledge the fact that the young person was Australian. She was constantly imposing her own view of “foreigner” on the young guy when he said he “was born in Australia”. The oppressed did defend himself in the situation, however, it could not change the oppressor’s perspective about his identity. The oppressor also excluded the oppressed from “Australian identity” because the young person’s father was born in New Zealand (Newshub, 2016). This consistent attack (or individual racism) was likely to cause internalised oppression to the oppressed because he might accept the stereotype and exclude himself from “the Australian way of life” (Axner, n.d). Furthermore, the racist behaviour in the case scenario might have a negative impact on the health and wellbeing of this young individual. According to Mansouri et al. Furthermore, social workers have to work respectfully and inclusively with cultural difference and diversity (AASW, 2013). Racism does bring a lot of hardship to those experienced. Therefore, one of the social work professional responsibility is to recognise and challenge racism and oppression experienced by individual of diverse group with the use of anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice (AASW, 2010). According to Guerin (2005), most interventions focus on education which aim at changing the people’s awareness of other cultures and races. Thus, it is not clear what needs to be done to combat racist and racism as racism is embedded deeply in the social and institutional context. In Australian history, White Australian policy existed up until 1970s which highly discriminated the migrants from non-Western countries. The institutional racism within this period of time did have a negative impact on the settlement of migrants and their process of acculturation. Racism varies depend on the contexts such as school, workplace, public, policies and so on. In order to combat racism, it is essential for social workers to be aware of and respect the cultural differences (cultural responsiveness) of the diverse groups in the Australian context (AASW, 2010).
