Tim O’Brian As many teenager’s dream, they picture a future with a wife, kids and a good job. The short story of “Rainy River” from Tim O’Brian’s book “Things They Carry” connect with numerous peoples. This story is relatable to many young men drafted into the Vietnam War. This war forever changed their lives with psychological effects from it. Significant scenes throughout the story engage the reader with the character’s emotions. By revealing the most intimate thoughts and feelings of its main character, “Rainy River” manages to convey the conflict he feels over a difficult decision: to fulfill his obligations and fight in a war he doesn’t agree with, or to break the law and leave the country in the attempt to pursue a better life. Once O’Brian receive the letter about being draft into the war, the first thought in his mind was, “I did not want to die” (34). After O’Brien left his town, he decided spent some alone time to think close to the Canada border, the rainy river. There he met Elroy, a quite person that did not judge Tim and gave him a place to stay for a while. Even though he did not know who Tim O’Brien was, his quite presence explore the idea that those young men draft need the presence of someone that would not judge his decision. The fishing scene where they were floating on the rainy river in the line between Canada and US, implied Elroy knew what Tim story was, giving him the chance to visualize and decide what he should do. This scene brought the hallucination Tim O’Brien had, where he saw important people that he cared about and important American’s figure that inspired him through life and fought for the United States.
