Gottlieb's article is about the shift in American parenting from a much stricter style, to a “helicopter” style. Helicopter parenting has historically leaned towards prioritizing a child's complete happiness and sheltering from any hardship. The text strongly disagrees with that style of parenting and describes the hindrance of psychological immunity and the ability to cope. According to Gottlieb, this removal of all hardship in the lives of our children also plays an influential role in the mental health crisis among young adults. When a child who has never persevered is faced with the task of adulthood, a total breakdown can occur.
