While Ransom was on the planet of Malacandra, he learned many aspects that forever changed the way he thought. He realized what the true needs for humans are and what Ransom is able to do without back on Thulcandra. Ransom also realizes what the Malacandrian’s themselves value based on specific conversations with the different species living on the planet. He realizes that Malacandra is almost a utopian society when it comes to dealing with other species. There isn't war, poverty, promiscuity, or avarice. While interacting with the hrossa, sorns, and pfifltriggi, Ransom recognizes that there are true needs for humans back on Thulcandra. Humans obviously need food, water and shelter to survive. Ransom tried to live off of what he could find by himself before he met Hyoi, but he was extremely delirious. Hyoi helped Ransom retrieve water with the oyster-like shell and a platter full of food. The air was cold and thin, which made it exceptionally hard to breathe. Ransom also finds that the Malacandrians have specific values as well. All three kinds of hnau do not have the evil and sin tendency that is among the humans on Thulcandra.
