Introduction
The book Reading Romans in Context: Paul and Second Temple Judaism, is a compilation of essays that compare the perspectives and teaching of Paul and various writers of Second Temple Judaism. Ben C. Blackwell, John K. Goodrich and Jason Maston are the editors for this compilation of writings. This book was put together as a project for their doctoral degree at Durham University in the UK. Blackwell holds multiple degrees, including a Ph. D. in New Testament and Historical Theology. He has been involved in several writings and publications mostly focusing on Pauline writings. He is currently the Director of Graduate Programs for the School of Christian Thought at Houston Baptist University. John K. The central point of this book is to bring various writings of Second Temple Judaism and use them to contextualize the book of Romans. The idea is to use these writings to help provide background in the events and historical settings involved during this time that could affect Paul and his letter to the Romans. Throughout the chapters, it breaks down scripture sections or theological themes in successive manors and compares them contextually to Second Temple writings that embodied similar themes.
