#1 Throughout the text, Richard describes how his educational and personal struggles overlap with one another. In the provided text, the writer provides the insights on the consistent struggle he faces as he tries to complete his much wanted education. His personal experiences reflect his struggle which helps establish the tone for the book as well help bring much of the many themes his autobiographical text touches on. Interestingly enough he goes on and includes that his struggles are his generation’s struggle. The journey he has set out requires him to be mentally and physically strong, which is strongly lacking in the present day (5). Not only that but he adds that he is a reflection of the much needed work that the nation needs as a whole. After briefing his goals on what he plans to achieve, the book is organized into themes of homes, security, and change. For the first couple chapters of the book, Mendoza captures the thoughts of the changing of demographics in small towns. He approached his interviews informally asking for ordinary people’s opinions on the recent changes in the communities and immigration that has occurred. Not only this but he managed to grab the insight of the existing residents and the immigrants point of view on the issue. Mendoza does not explicitly mention specific themes instead they are drawn through inferences and hints by the provided information. Immigration being a strong and major topic throughout the text, the concept is broken down to different point of views. Also not directly mentioned by Mendoza it is seen that each topic includes the point of view of residents, immigrants, and their interpretation through the media. Briefly mentioned, the media is said to play a major role in the view of immigration. However, the media does not always accurately reflect the effects of immigration. As Mendoza travels, he is told of the much injustices and method of correction and protection toward the immigration community. The idea of utilizing the media as method to educate and help spread awareness of the positive change the immigration community is brought up.
