Roxie Hart, a vaudeville wannabe, watches Velma Kelly perform in the night club the night Velma is arrested for the murder of her sister and husband. Roxie and her escort, Fred Casely, go to Roxie’s apartment and have an affair after Casley tells Roxie he can make her a star. After admitting to being a fraud, Fred Casely is shot by Roxie. In an attempt to save her name Roxie’s husband, Amos Hart, lies to the authorities claiming he was the one who shot Casely. Roxie is arrested and sent the Cook County Jail where she meets Matron Morton (“Mama”), who lives by the philosophy, “when you’re good to Mama, Mama’s good to you”. Roxie and Billy manipulate the press in order to reinvent Roxie’s image claiming Roxie was attacked and only used self-defense as they “both reached for the gun”. Velma is outraged with the publicity Roxie receives and tries to get Roxie to join her in a double act in order to put her name back in the spotlight, Roxie refuses because she is now the more popular of the two. Roxie loses the public eye when Kitty Baxter murders her husband and two of his lovers. In order to regain the public’s affection she claims she is pregnant with Casely’s child. Amos is urged by Flynn to divorce Roxie to help Roxie’s case. Gaining confidence, Roxie fires Billy, claiming he’s just out to get money. After Katalin Helinszki is murdered, Roxie is frightened and rehires Billy to continue the case.
