The perpetrators aren’t spared from the pain of their actions, either. Their acts of betrayal, abandonment, and disappointment also cause harm to themselves. The harmful effects of these acts committed do not spare anyone. While the perpetrators in these acts of betrayal, disappointment, and abandonment cause harm to others, they also cause themselves harm. Circling back to CODA and Ruby’s family, her parents' betrayal of withholding her from going to college and achieving her dream comes back to bite. On the day of the required fishing inspection, Ruby doesn’t show up. On the boat, she’s the only one who can communicate with the inspector, and the only one who can communicate with other vessels. This is Ruby’s karma for all of the pain and harm her family has caused her–especially her parents. The family had just started doing well, selling more fish and selling them independently. But their plan of keeping Ruby home to help run the family business and to be a translator backfires: she abandons the family. Her abandonment is in an act of defiance and pain, directly harming the perpetrators who harmed her in the first place. The harm that is inflicted is not selective towards just livelihoods, it also affects the emotions of the perpetrator, too. In Death of a Salesman, Willy feels the effects of betrayal and the emotional harm that comes with it. Linda, without the new stockings she was promised, continues to mend her old ones to use again. But Willy isn’t comfortable with her mending, asking her ‘would you stop mending stockings? At least while I’m at the house. It gets me nervous, too. I can’t tell you what to do. Please,” (Miller 75). Willy admits that his betrayal makes him nervous, but it also makes him feel guilty. In his mind, the image of Linda mending stockings causes him to relive what he did and what Biff saw, causing him to fear if Linda will find out what he
