Jesmyn Ward an American novelist as well as a professor who’s best known for her book of Salvage of The Bones and Sing Unburied ,Sing. She helped bring light on the tragic hidden disaster that was Katrina.
Born in 1977 in a small town in Mississippi where she attended a private school due to bullying of her ethnicity. She talked about her experience growing up in middle-income black neighborhoods during the rise of Hurricane Katrina. She saw the struggle as people begged for water doing anything as they possibly can to survive.She attended the University of Michigan where she earned a MFA in creative writing.where she later transferred and earned a Master's Degree at Stanford University .
To add on , She went on to write one of her most famous and interesting books Salvage of the Bones which landed her a National Book Award in 2011 which really me want to read it and read it . This book was based on the experiences she had during Hurricane Katrina . She wrote the novel and thought that Katrina wasn’t as relevant today then it should have been. Her other book The Fire This Time is a collection of essays and poems about race. Both of these novels were also cherished by readers and critics alike.The way she uses her high level of education and first hand experience to create huge impacting effects on the reader is why she is such an amazing author. This works great because it takes note on the issue that some African Americans face that you might not see on the news. She wants to take light on this issue and help people understand what some people are going through. She wont stop there, she still continues her legacy to this day.
