In the book Salvation on Sand Mountain, by Denis Covington we read about Covington and his adventure that started as a journalist and then led him into a new adventure. His new adventure consisted about being open-minded and giving himself the opportunity to try new things, such as learning about a different religion than his own. In his adventure he discovers all about snake handling as a religion and how the spirit guides them. Covington argues that being open-minded to explore a different type of religion is important, rather than judging them for their beliefs. Overall, Covington’s main goal was to teach his audience the importance of being open minded when learning about ne religions. Covington argues that being impartial about a new religions is important. Covington tries to prove his point in many ways throughout his book. For example, in the beginning of the book we learn that as he was driving he was able to feel the beat of the music it was like nothing he had heard before, he drove up and stood for a moment and realized then and there that he had the opportunity to experience something new (Covington, pg. 2). This proves that he was willing to be open minded and try something new. Covington wants people to be open minded to try new things. In addition, he supports his argument by being opened-minded and trying snake-handling as a religion. He goes from being part of the Methodist Church to snake-handling and they both have completely different believes and rituals. At times he made me feel confused. But I think that Covington had a very strong argument; that people need to be more open-minded about religion and be willing to experience new things. Most people are shortsighted and don’t want to experience things that are new to them. Most people are afraid of trying new things, trying things that is outside of their comfort zone. Before reading the book or learning about his book I had no knowledge about this subject. So, handling snakes as a religion to me was something new. In my personal experience I don’t see snake-handling as something sacred. But as Covington argues I think that it is important that instead of judging snake-handling as a religion to be more open-minded about it. No religion is right or wrong, and people have the right to decide what they consider to be a religion. This book made me realize that it is important to be open-minded and that because people have different believes than me it doesn’t mean that they are wrong. I was surprised to see that people would consider handling snakes as a religion because they are guided by the spirit on how to handle the snake so they don’t het bitten. What surprised me was that they would risk their lives by handling poisonous snakes and not be afraid to get bitten. How their belief in the spirit was so powerful that it overcame their fear of getting bitten. I think that I was surprised to read
