Saul Indian Horse had a traumatic childhood. He was taken away by white people after having his sibling being taken away from his family. First of, this story started very dark; from the very beginning, Saul had a rough childhood. Moreover, while, he was still a part of the Fish Clan, his gift was his vision; for, he saw (he had a vision) of his ancestors getting crushed by a boulder when he was by the river during the night. Again, when Saul was trying to escape to a better life --after his family had gain hope from regaining Saul’s brother -- Saul’s hope was taken away after he had that vision. Hockey has freed Saul. Saul even said “I would not feel lonely or afraid, deserted or abandoned, but connected to something far bigger than myself. Saul was known as a Fish Clan child but is now known as an amazing hockey player. Saul uses hockey to escape his pain -- like how his family used drinking to escape their pain from the lost of their children. Which is one of the theme in this book -- the theme of escaping the tragedies by distracting yourself. Frankly, abuse is a recurrent theme throughout the story which has affected Saul. His family was ruin because of the white men; but since they had to make a living, they had to work earnestly for the white people. For Saul’s case, even if he had the advantage of speaking English, he suffered a lot in the school. Hockey shows this theme as well. Saul uses Hockey to defend himself when he plays white Canadian teams. The big picture is that the Indians can’t escape white people, so they have to do the best as they can to live with them. His changes is realistic; however, if I were him, I probably wouldn't be as strong as he is. I would probably become mute, because I would be so scared to speak.
