2016 March 03 Titled: To My White Friends Who See Tragedy In the Black Community and Say Nothing, Make it Personal, Kiara Williams does an exceptional job highlighting the carelessness in which white people disregard racism in America. Using examples from her everyday life, Williams compares and contrasts how certain things may bother her but come across as meaningless to her white peer. “To walk past a Confederate flag and feel nothing, to cheer for the Redskins and not feel inferior, to watch how the media discusses Muslims as a monolithic group of violent people and not think twice, is a privilege.” With her powerful use of both ethos and pathos alongside critical comparisons Williams presents to us just how harming it can be when non-blacks turn a deaf ear to racism. For the reader to stop and think if “that one opinion” is merely just an opinion of something far more detrimental and greater. Thus further persuading the reader that racism is personal to not only African Americans, but should be personal to all. Furthermore convincing is William’s use of ethos. “I have a legal degree from one of the most prestigious law schools in the country, but I was reminded when Martese Johnson yelled out “I go to UVA,” before the white officers smashed his bloody face into the concrete. That my education is not protection.” The imagery in this quote is overwhelming and forces the reader to really ponder if America is really this harsh to groups of people.
