Sixth Grader Rob Horton is socially awkward, in the first chapter he explains that he stuffs all of his feelings into an imaginary suitcase and closes it. In addition to Rob being socially inept, Rob also has a rash on his legs that he constantly gets teased about. At school Rob’s principal thinks that Rob’s rash is contagious, so he sends Rob home. Rob and his father live at the Kentucky Star Motel in Lister, Florida. Rob is an outsider and doesn’t have any friends, until he meets the new girl Sistine.
This Dark Endeavour is by the award winning author, Kenneth Oppel. This speculative fiction book is about a young group of kids who go on an adventure in order to find a cure for their beloved ill friend Konrad. The main characters are Victor Frankenstein, his twin brother Konrad, their cousin Elizabeth, and their friend Henry. The book is written in Victor’s 1st person point of view. All is well throughout the story until Konrad gets terribly ill.

The story Seventh Grade (by Gary Soto) is a realistic fiction short story (it was a few pages of a story that could happen but didn’t/hasn’t) made for kids / teens. The purpose was to tell a lighthearted story about a seventh grade boy and a day in his school with his friend and his crush. The author used a lighthearted and funny tone in the story to make it interesting and told it from the third person limited point of view focused on Victor. There wasn’t too much indirect characterization, but there was some during the end of the story where he’s trying to catch the attention of his crush and lies about knowing French. This indirect characterization shows that he wants to be noticed by her by (pretty much) any means.
Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, is a short fictional story that incorporates many elements of literature to entertain the reader. The theme of the story is to make good impressions, due to many instances in the story. Victor's friend, Michael, learned to scowl to attract girls, and to give him a more handsome look. Victor wanted to leave good impressions on girls, so he tried out the scowl as well.
Character Foils: Victor and The Monster Often in a literary work, authors use minor characters to emphasize specific traits and characteristics of a main character. In Mary Shelley’s best selling novel Frankenstein, the monster is a minor reflection of Victor Frankenstein. Victor’s personality traits from when he was a child, and as an adult, are carried over and placed into his creation unintentionally by Victor himself.
Loss affects and shapes people in many different ways. Tobias Wolff’s memoir This Boys Life, charts the young boys trials and adulations, growing up in the turbulent post war 1950s america with a warm hearted but ineffectual mother and a long string of violent and dangerous partners. Poverty and violence in his life rob Toby of his childhood innocence forcing him to hide in his own imagination to shield himself from harm. At the tender age of ten Toby witnesses a major “crash”. Standing “at the cliffs edge” Toby does not realise how much of an ominous sign this is for his life.
Victor Frankenstein’s relationship with his sister, Elizabeth, is very intimate, to the brink of over-possessive. He demonstrates an innate association of ‘ownership’ towards Elizabeth. His intense fondness for Elizabeth is due to the prior lack of companionship during his childhood. He’s been the sole target of his parents’ affection for many years as they traveled. The constant traveling caused Victor to feel isolation, due to only having his parents as companions.

The short story “Mother and Daughter” by Gary Soto tells the story of an instance in which eighth grader, Yollie Moreno, is the victim of circumstance. Yollie is a smart, but innocent, young woman who lives with her impoverished mother.
I chose the book by Neila Connors, If you Don’t Feed the Teachers, They Eat the Students!:Guide to Success for Administrators and Teachers to review. The book is an easy read and is refreshing in its approach as a guide for administrators. The author uses cooking metaphors to offer some practical advice on how to be an effective leader. Although the tone of the book is light and funny, it does a good job addressing the serious task that all school principals face, creating a positive and encouraging environment for teachers. As the book emphasizes the teachers are the foundation of the school, unhappy staff will not produce successful students.
