Linda Smith’s masterpiece, Renting Lacey, sheds a light on the cruel underground world of sex trafficking in the United states. She has penned realistic, yet heart wrenching reality of prostituted children living amongst us. The text paints a thought provoking and engrossing image due to the fact girls are exploited in various cities across the country. It is truly disaaipinting to know that hundreds of underaged gilrs are prostiuted in the commercial sex industry. They are nothing but a temporary comadite. Prior, my knowledge was insufficient. After finishing the book, I was in grim awe and disbelief. How is it possible that the girls who fall victim to sex traffickers come from our own communities-churches, schools, etc. I, like many people, have always assumed that sex trafficking of young children was a developing country issue. I never thought it would happen in a country where values, human dignity, and freedom are held dearly. How many of those indulas are trapped in domestic sex trafficking? The exact number will never be known; but with the application of the knowledge gained from “Renting Lacey” we can identify who might be involved and help. Parents have the right to protect their children. The protection includes knowing the children's whereabouts, friends, and academic standings. For instance, daughter spends hours doing activities secretly, dressing certain way, failing school, or behaving in a foul way, that is a hug sign that something is very wrong, thus, parents must act. The second group of people that could easily identify the signs of underage prostitution are teachers. Believe it or not teachers know great deal about their students. A young girl who is a prostitute could easily be identified by 1) always being tired, 2) failing,3) bruises, tattoos, etc. Interestingly, many of the domestic sex trafficking victim show many signs of being exploited; unless we learn to identify those signs, we will never know and our ignorance gives consent to those horrible sex traffickers to keep on exploiting vulnerable
