“Charles” Summary Laurie misbehaved because he did not receive enough attention at home. Shirley Jackson’s son’s actions inspired her to write the short story “Charles”, which takes place in the 1950’s. Laurie’s parents paid more attention to his baby sister than to him which caused him to misbehave in his kindergarten class. As a result, Laurie did not adjust properly to kindergarten. During Laurie’s first week of kindergarten, he was given negative attention from his teacher because he was being fresh. He came home to tell his parents about what happened at school that day by blaming Charles. Laurie was not only disrespectful to his class, he was disrespectful to his family, as he “spoke insolently to his father” (Jackson 345) at home that
