11. Phillis Wheatley is the first African American women that write poems. She was taken into slavery at a young age, but her owners were nice because they allowed her to receive knowledge of literature. She decided to write to express her views, to tell the truth about things like slavery and how not all slave owners are bad. In her writing, she used a lot of bible references and she wrote for people who need it, but most people in the south along with slaves/slave-owners. One of her best-known work is "on being brought from Africa to America" and uses a lot of biblical symbolism.
