In the article "American Slavery, Reinvented" by Whitney Benns is an analysis of states forcing their prisoners into full days of servitude to rehabilitate themselves, however, there has been some debate that this form of rehabilitation is cruel. Prison labor is a practice that many states are using on the incarcerated. Once the prisoners are medically cleared, they are forced to work in directed areas or face punishments such as solitary confinement and denying the inmates from family visits. There are multiple theories to justify why prison labor is being enforced that Benns focuses on in her article. Additionally, she believes the prisons found a way to bring back a depressing moment in American history.
Justin Brookshire HIST 4001 01/24/2023 The first scholarly historical work of significance considering the topic of slavery as an institution is American Negro Slavery by Ulrich Bonnell Phillips. As a southerner publishing in 1918, this book was racist in nature against African Americans. Phillips’ argues in his book that slavery was a necessary paternalistic practice between master and slave that established an interdependent agricultural society for the betterment of the country.
In the letter by Thomas R. Dew, “Defends Slavery” his first acknowledgement is that slavery is wrong. People as we know now will not accept slavery in our humanity, but in 1832 it was normal, as there were hundreds of thousands of slaves. Nothing in our old or New Testament stated that slavery was wrong, and not allowed. Dew goes on to state people like Abraham, Isaac, and “patriarchs” themselves had slave, meaning it was ok. He understands that slavery did consist of cruel and uncivilized masters of slaves, especially talks about how the cruel ones were most often than not the unaccustomed ones.
David N. Gellman is a professor of Early American History at DePauw University in Indiana and his written work focuses greatly on colonial America and emancipation in the United States. As an expert in Early American History, David N. Gellman gives us a strong background on the institution of slavery in New York in his book Emancipating New York and the road to the emancipation of African Americans in the state of the New York. David N. Gellman’s book Emancipating New York describes the process by which the state of New York abolished slavery with a combination of white opposition, black resistance and political changes. The abolition of slavery in New York was an effort of the above-mentioned sectors of society and government, all with differing views, interests and agendas.
While I sat in my room and read this book I found it to quite interesting and when going thought the list this was the first one that caught my eye. I have read many books never have I read an autobiography. I figured since I was in history class this was the perfect opportunity. I was happy with the content in the book. I feel as if this book showed me another side to slavery I didn’t know about, I have always known slavery and what it was about by as a former slave told his side it was something else.
I was re-reading chapter 14 and I found it interesting that many former slaves took on there owners last name. Why do you think they did that? For ease in the transitioning to free people? Was it out of respect for there owners? In reading that chapter it explains that many former slaves had welcomed back there former owners with warm greeting and wishes, that they handed back there keys to land and house willingly.
In the autobiography, “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl,” Harriet Jacobs is able to tell her story and show the pain of bondage she endured. Jacobs lived from 1813-1897, and all she ever knew was the life of a slave. It is her story, even though she uses a pseudonym, Linda Brent, in order to protect her identity. Her real name is later discovered by scholars, and she is then given the credit for her writing. The book was published in 1861, after fleeing north to New York.
The essay by Christopher Leslie Brown, “Slavery and antislavery, 1760-1820”, depicted the setting of that time frame in regards to slavery. One very interesting thing he pointed out was how some countries would recruit former slaves or current slaves to serve in the army against the colonist or whomever the slaves typically opposed. Those armies used that potential hatred and anger to fuel the slaves to rebel and fight against the very people that enslaved them. That however, did not come without some consequences.
The primary source of the New Orleans slave market in the reading is from Solomon Northup’s book about the time he spent in Louisiana after being kidnapped into slavery. Dehumanized is facilitated by status power like slaveholders, social connection. According to the history of slavery in Louisiana, every slave had information including name of individual, name of master, gender, race, age, family relationships including spouse and children. Moreover, selling information such as name of seller is an important piece for slaves. Circumstance in Louisiana is a whole different story in New York where Solomon Northup used to live and slavery had been abolished since 1829.

Whether or not a slave narrative is able to persuade its readers of the inhumanities of slavery, the complexities within slave narratives and the discussions they create should not be overlooked. There is power within the act of writing one’s personal journeys and hardships throughout life, and that power gives former enslaved people the opportunity to express their own thoughts while making changes for future generations. Solomon Northup’s 12 Years A Slave gives a heart-wrenching depiction of what slavery was like in America. If the cruel images of the realities of slavery do not affect readers emotionally, then there is at least hope that the logical arguments raised throughout the novel can persuade those who are unwilling to see slavery
With this evidence of higher child abuse in lower socioeconomic classes, this confirms the individual level factor idea that Clayton has. With this proven, it can lead to sex trafficking in these lower classes because according to Clayton, previous abuse will more likely lead a person down the path of sexual exploitation.
