Nobody thinks about what somebody has gone through before judging them. Often times people are judged solely based on their decisions, but nobody looks at what caused that person to make that decision. Judgement happens a lot in the story “Sold”, but nobody can truly understand what the people in the story had to go through. The story previously mentioned is the story “Sold” by Patricia McCormick. The story is about a thirteen year old girl who gets sold by her step father into human trafficking by her step father, after ending up at the happiness house the story talks about all the struggles she faces before getting saved by some nice americans. Shilpa has been in the house longer than anybody. She is in the house because of her own choosing. Her mom was in the house for a long time, therefore she decided to stay to make it easier for herself. Shilpa is Mumtaz’s spy and will snitch on anybody who tries and do the wrong thing. Anything that will hurt Mumtaz or the business she gets rid of. She is also very rude and does not care about anyone but herself. “Your even stupider than I thought. You think the money goes home to your family?” (McCormick 238). Lakshmi is already hopeless and has hit rock bottom, when she finally realizes she’s not going home, Shilpa crushes her down even more. Lakshmi was relying on the money she made to get sent home as a way to help her get through each day. However, her family doesn’t see a single rupee. Shilpa makes many bad decisions, but she is only doing it to try to stay alive. “Shilpa is here of her own choice. She has no debt to Mumtaz. She can leave whenever she wants” (McCormick 167). Even if Shilpa left, she would have no place to go. She also doesn't want to be treated like everyone else, so she helps Mumtaz in return for a place to stay. This isn't a good reason or excuse for treating everyone else bad, especially Lakshmi, but she is only trying survive in such a cruel world. A few days into the voyage she meets a man named husband, but is also named uncle. Husband is Lakshmi’s last ride before she gets to the happiness house. Even though he acts nice, he is mean just like everyone else in the story. “This is Happiness House, Auntie Mumtaz will explain it all to you” (McCormick 90). Uncle Husband knows exactly what is going to happen to Lakshmi, but he continues to act fake and be nice to her. He knows all about who Mumtaz is and what he is doing for her. He continues to hide the truth about what Lakshmi, a 13 year old girl, is going to be forced to do.
