Soldier Boy was written by Dean Hughes and was published in the year of 2001. It is a fiction book about two boys named, Dieter Hendrick and Spence Morgan. Dieter is fifteen and in the Hitler Youth and he wants to be promoted into the German army. Spence has just turned sixteen, and wants to be a paratrooper, so he drops out of highschool so he can start training. When the boys actually go into war, it's not what they were expecting. Dieter Hendrick is a German boy who is in Hitler Youth, and he wants to be in the German army. While Dieter was in Hitler Youth, his leader wanted his men to become stronger and wiser. He was promoted to leader, and during his leadership he got to meet Hitler himself. Hitler gave him a metal and told him he has moved up from Hitler Youth to the German army. When his parents found out that he got into the army they were very upset that their other son was also going to be in the army. They signed the papers even though they were still upset they knew they couldn't change his mind. Spence Morgan is an American boy who dropped out of school so he can start training to become a paratrooper. Within three days of training Ted wanted to quit because it was difficult, Spence did not let that happen. Spence told Ted that they have made this far and we are not quitting now. Ted and Spence’s captains let them go see combat and some action, so they know what it is like when you're in war. When he saw the battle it was not what he had imagined it to be, it was worse, lots of blood, people crying because of the unbearable pain.
