Speak was written in 1999 by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book is about Melinda, a freshman just starting high school. Melinda starts school off with no friends, she lost the ones she had over the summer. A traumatic event causes Melinda to shut everyone out, and not speak to anyone. Growing up usually takes time, but Melinda is rushed into maturity too soon and must help others do the same.
Melinda`s behavior reflcets the theme because she has come to the realization that keeping her feelings bottled up will not
Throughout the book, Melinda has problems with her family. For example, her family is mad because she is not achieving academic grade levels. Furthermore, she also has issues with her friends. She called the cops and her friends get mad.
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is a book about a girl named Melinda Sordino. In the beginning of this book the audience meets Melinda as she is the main character and she describes her first day of high school starting with an assembly. Throughout the book you read about her life but she goes back to the past recalling of something that happened at the end of the summer; in a couple of instances she comes across someone that she refers to as “IT”. When reading you don't know who this “IT” is but it is developed over the story by her having flashbacks to that night or dropping a hint of what happened. During a seminar at the beginning of the book Melinda meets someone named Heather who is new and becomes her friend but ultimately leaves her
It is estimated that 1 in 6 women will be a victim of attempted or completed rape, however, only 16-40% of all rape is reported. In the realistic-fiction novel, Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, 14-year-old Melinda becomes a victim of rape at a summer party and begins to hide from herself to avoid the past. Within the novel Anderson uses the mirror as a motif to show Melinda’s growth from hiding from herself to defending herself. After Melinda’s assault, she calls the police while watching herself in the reflection of a window. “I saw my face in the window over the kitchen sink and no words came out of my mouth” (Anderson 136).
Also it’s showing that everyone does not think of her the same way. Melinda is also not blend in with everyone because she is wearing different clothes. In the end of the book, Rachel starts talking to Melinda again after she finds out Andy Evans raped her. Another part in the beginning of the book Heather starts making friends with Melinda but when Heather starts using her, Melinda stands up to her. Heather is super nice to Melida and invites her to do things, but when she meets the Martha’s she slowly started to leave Melinda behind until she needed something.
In the beginning of the book Melinda is able to make one friend, and that happened to be a new girl named Heather. As a first attempt to make a friend Heather spots Melinda alone and decides to try and befriend her. Although with the passing of time Heather finds a new crowd to hang out with. Melinda starts to feel excluded, and one day during lunch Heather tries to break ties with her.
Book report I've read the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book is about the teenage girl Melinda, who has just started Merryweather High. She knew from the beginning that she wouldn't fit in, that she wouldn't be one of the popular girls. Every one hates her after what happened during summer, her previous friends don't want to know nothing about Melinda anymore and the rumours about her aren't so positive either. She will forever be the girl who called the police in the middle of the party and no one bothered to look up the reason behind the call.
Heather pointing this out is another opportunity for Melinda to explain herself and speak up about why she acts that way, and is another opportunity that she turns down. When Melinda stays silent and gives up this chance, she allows Heather to leave, despite not wanting her to leave. Another time Melinda avoids conflict is after Melinda falls asleep in the broom closet and goes to the basketball game, David invites Melinda to a party after school, when she refuses, thinking to herself, “Nope. I don’t do parties. No thanks.
At the end of the story she finally found her voice and was able to stand up for herself. In the beginning, Melinda didn't talk to anyone, barely even to her parents. She says, “I have tried so hard to forget every second of that stupid party and here I am in the middle of a hostile crowd that hates me for what I had to do. I can't tell them what really happened” (Anderson, 28).
They were still clearly upset about how she busted the party, so they ignored her. It’s hard to be friends with people that dislike you. The final reason I think Melinda is an outcast is because she barely spoke during her freshman year, both at home and at school. She was struggling in school, so she and her parents ended up in the principal’s office. The principal was talking about how her grades went down and that they should talk to her about it.
Speaking Relations What could he possibly have done to hurt her so immensely? Holding her pain in, she slowly tears herself apart on the inside. She shuts herself off from the world. She doesn’t care about school anymore or the people there. Her home life becomes even worse.
High school can be a scary place for many newcomers, upperclassmen with facial hair, people start driving, getting ready for the ultimate goal of college, some would call high school a awkward puberty acne faced hell. For melinda the first year of highschool was a whole new level of hell, not many can compare their experiences to her own. The novel speak goes hand in hand with the theme of transformation. Melinda Sordino, fourteen-year-old high school freshman, is drastically transformed when she's raped by popular senior Andy Evans or “IT” as melinda calls him. Melinda loses all her friends at a party just before she starts high school due to a grave misunderstanding.
“‘Let me tell you about it’” (Anderson 198). These words were spoken by a character who struggled to find her voice but once she did, she grew as a person. The author who wrote these words is Laurie Halse Anderson. Born in October of 1961, Anderson has published many notable works as a New York Times bestselling author.
The novel Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is about a girl named Melinda, who shows signs of depression throughout the story. She has no friends and is hated by people she doesn’t even know. This is because she called the cops at a party, where she was raped. Anderson includes literary elements to show how Melinda is depressed. Throughout the novel, she uses many different literary elements to show Melinda’s conflict.
