Speak was written in 1999 by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book is about Melinda, a freshman just starting high school. Melinda starts school off with no friends, she lost the ones she had over the summer. A traumatic event causes Melinda to shut everyone out, and not speak to anyone. Growing up usually takes time, but Melinda is rushed into maturity too soon and must help others do the same.
“Speak,” is a novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. The setting is in Syracuse, New York in the early 2000’s. Melinda Sordino is the narrator of the story and is a freshman at Merryweather High School. During the summer before her freshman year, she goes to a party with her close friends filled with alcohol and music. At the party, she drinks many beers and becomes intoxicated.
I recently read the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. The main character Melinda Sordino went through a lot during her summer. Her freshman year isn't off to a good start. During the summer she called the cops at a party, no one knew why she kept it a secret, but she soon tells of what really happened. She changed a lot throughout the story from being depressed, staying home and hiding in a closet at school, to becoming open and telling her secret of what happened to her.

In this book a girl named Melinda was drunk and got raped at a back to school party. And all she can do is think to call the police for help, but she doesn't realize that she is about to get almost everyone in there school busted for drinking. Everyone finds out she called the police at the party and everyone neglects and hates her for getting them in trouble.
Speak is a young adult novel written by Laurie Halse Anderson that tells the story of young Melinda Scordio who has to endure the aftermath of her rape, while also adapting to the changes it has brought upon her life. Melinda has just started high school, but due to past events that occurred last summer, she is left as an empty shell with her voice snatched away and little hopes of returning. Melinda has remained silent and finds herself lost in the chaos of it all. She is able to find her sanctuary, not only a place, but something with much more meaning. Throughout the book, Melinda struggles with opening herself up to people and being able to tell her story.

Melinda ended up losing all her friends, and becoming depressed. This incident was a senior at her school raping Melinda at a party. Melinda’s friend Rachel had gotten her into a senior party in the summer.
His friends were encouraging him to do things that Wes knows are bad. His friends were pressuring Wes to drink and smoke, even though he knew that it was a bad decision and he would never do it again. This shows peer influence through Wes and his friends. Next, not all friends are bad influences on Wes. “Peer relationships have the potential to promote as well as protect against engagement in dangerous risky behavior.
Peer pressure can be as strong as the force in Star Wars because people can be bully someone into doing things. Peer pressure can make someone’s future really awful by making a terrible choice. Peer pressure is really bad for kids so young and teens since they make kids and teens have consequences of their terrible choice.
At a young age, parents tend to teach their child right from wrong. They teach you this to become responsible, so when your an adult you do not have to rely on them while making decisions. In George Orwell's Shooting an Elephant, we notice he wanted to do the right thing by not shooting the elephant but gave into peer pressure to fit in. The narrator felt the need he had to shoot the elephant because the people of Burma were frightened and he wanted to be their hero. Peer pressure can lead people to do bad things for what they think are good reasons but are actually not.
Peer pressure can make you do bad things that can have terrible effects on your future and you will not be the same person you once were. Being yourself is an amazing accomplishment, many people fail to stay the same and become drug addicts or possibly suicidal and that is why peer pressure is so dangerous. If you change as a person it will not end well and your future could be ruined.
Peer pressure affects teenagers because they feel like they have to do it and they are expected to do something that they don’t want to. I feel that in “Speak” Laurie Halse Anderson is practically saying that peer pressure is everywhere and a lot of people do it. In the story, Melinda was pressured into drinking, having sex, and skipping class (Halse). I have been pressured into skipping class a few times, but I have never done it. Melinda and I have both been pressured into skipping class (Halse).
One of the most interesting phenomena in human nature is peer pressure. It is responsible for more guilt and feelings of failure in young and old alike that we as Christians need to take a very close look at what causes it and how we can overcome it. Peer Pressure is when an individual feels compelled to behave in certain ways due to the implied or perceived will of a group of peers. This pressure to perform is most often seen in little ways in young people: making silly comments to parents in the presence of friends, making hurtful comments to others to get a laugh from those around us. Although these situations are usually thought to be attempts to gain attention to ourselves, it is the beginning of an individuals desire to please the group.
Experiencing peer pressure is a way to learn how to overcome pressure and to discover ourselves. We can not become perfect, but we definitely become stronger, more confident and are willing to cope with difficulties. Exposure to peer pressure also gives us an opportunity to think about other people’s outlooks towards life. It is a chance for us to choose the best from what the masses do as well as lead us to make right choices in life. To minimize the bad effects of peer pressure, parential involvement plays a very important part – it promote healthy behaviors and decrease the chance to engage in risky behavior.
