Tyler Pahl Mr. Schwytzer Writing Workshop 17 April 2023 Kennedy's Speech to the Comunity Robert F. Kennedy, a senator from New York and former attorney general, in his speech “Remarks on The Assassination of MLK Jr.”(1968), argues that despite this tragedy the nation must move forward with hope. He supports this claim by using pathos to make a personal connection and then uses logos to establish calmness among the people. Kennedy’s purpose was to inform the people of MLK’s death and give them hope for the future in order to gain equal rights for everyone. He starts with a somber tone for his audience but then moves on to a hopeful tone for the people listening to the sad news. Robert F. Kennedy used pathos to make emotional connections to the African American community to show he knew how they felt and to try and prevent riots in the wake of the tragic news. Further to the end of the speech he pushes for the community to dedicate themselves to a good future by stating “Let's dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world. Let us dedicate ourselves to that, and say a prayer for our country and for our people..”(Kennedy 2) Kennedy uses this example to show he wants the people to move forward together to a better future just as the ancient Greeks did and not to separate into fighting each other. Using logos in this manner shows the audience that despite this tragic setback to the movement there is still good to come of it and it's important not to turn on one another but to keep moving forward to the end where good will come of these
