Holes 1. Stanley keeps walking towards the mountain because he feels that there is water there, and he also wants to find Zero. The whole reason Stanley left was because he was worried about Zero. I guess he felt responsible because if he had said no to Zero about digging his hole, none of this would have happened. Before he left to find Zero, he kept asking himself “what if it’s not too late” as in he could still save Zero and maybe he didn’t die.
After Reading Hole in my life by Jack gantos I believe that the choices Gantos made influenced his life more than the background situation he was in. The first poor choice gantos makes in this book is agreeing to join the Hash smuggling trip for $10,000. “count me in” he says, fatal words that have horrible consequences. The first of these consequences is “... a book the size of a dictionary.

In fact, the guard stated, “Nine hours here, and now nine hours back… What a day.” Stanley “felt a little sorry for the guard and the bus driver” for putting them through the trouble.
At the time, society’s norms led Stanley to believe that ‘“Every Man is a King!”’ and that he was the king over his own household (Williams, Scene 8 page 131). This ideal influenced Stanley to be power hungry and abusive, which negatively affected his relationship with his wife Stella. However, Stanley never gave up on Stella when she ran away because he was determined to be a good husband (Williams, Scene 3 page 65).

Although they do not always consider it, individuals are all members of different groups and communities. At the University of Oklahoma, there is a wide ranging variety of discourse communities that anyone could get involved in. In such groups, there are practices, concerns, traditions, history, beliefs and ultimately something held in common that binds them all together. A while after she got settled in, Blanche witnessed Stanley physically abusing her sister, Stella, and then started secretly rebuking Stanley to Stella. She saw their relationship as unhealthy and tried everything that she could to destroy it. After overhearing Blanche telling Stella to get rid of him, Stanley begins to steadily contemplate his revenge. “In the state of Louisiana we have the Napoleonic code according to which what belongs to the wife belongs to the husband and vice versa” (22). Although he sounds like is supporting Stella in the fact that she was “cheated” out of her property, he is really being self-considerate. This quote shows that Stanley feels entitled to whatever Stella owns. Stanley is a man of the working class, and with this estate and the wealth that comes with it, Stanley feels as though he is also wealthy. With this wealth, Stanley would feel and act more even more superior than
He believes Blanche has disrespected him and been against him the entire time she has been staying at his home, although she has consumed his food, drunk his alcohol, and used his house. Stanley felt as though, if Blanche was using his possessions, she also belonged to him. She never recognized his claim to the title of "king" in his own home. Not only that, but she made him feel inferior to her, which his character cannot stand. He must either take revenge or watch helplessly as his marriage, home, and self-esteem are decimated.
Holes is a bildungsroman novel by Louis Sachar. The story is about a young teenager named Stanley, who develops into a better person. Throughout the novel, Stanley learns to be brave and courageous, and digs up his hidden treasures. Stanley changed from being a pessimistic boy who didn’t believe in himself and never defended his thoughts or beliefs, to being courageous, optimistic, and learning to stand up for himself. Stanley discovered the hidden treasures buried deep down inside him.
After all that happened, Stanley became the strong and bold individual he truly was, inside. Stanley shows the backbone he’s grown when he says, “Isn 't it more important for him to learn to read? Doesn’t that build more character more than digging holes?” (Louis Sachar 137), to the Warden. He 's finally breaking out of his shy and timid state, by standing up to the her/his worst enemy.

This proves that Stanley bought Blanche her own bus ticket back home to get rid of her for good because all he sees is her causing trouble for him. It also proves the ugly way that Stanley talks to his friends which hopefully they realize they shouldn't let him talk to them that way. Stanley is antithetical to Mitch.
