Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling is a play of love, comedy, strength and tears. The story takes place in Truvy's Beauty Salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana and revolves around the lives of six woman who, in my opinion, are the Steel Magnolias of the tittle. The women dealt with many setbacks in life, and as the play progresses the characters learn how to either live with them or find a way to get through them. The play begins on the day of Shelby’s wedding to Jackson. Shelby is the only daughter of M’Lynn. Though Shelby has two brothers, M’Lynn favors her because of her fragile health since childhood. Shelby’s primary concern, after marriage, is starting a family of her own, however, due to health related concerns associated with diabetes, Shelby had been advised against having children. Although Shelby was aware of the risks of conceiving children, she was determined to start her own family and gave birth to a son, Jackson Jr. this put somewhat of a strain on the relationship between mother and daughter, however through the support of their friends. I did not feel that I was watching actors on the stage, but rather that I was watching the lives of the six individuals unfold. They became their characters. Terri Page Hoover in her role as Truvy, Shawna Glad as M’Lynn and Tara Jones Wright are a great examples of this (Shawna really had me “feeling” her emotions, I almost cried). After reading a little more about them, I realize what vastly talented people they are. Everyone else was also great and really talented, I feel that the acting in the play was truly amazing. The audience seemed to understand what was taking place and connected with the actresses'
